18/09/2007 1st Day at work

Chinese pear for breakfast… (yum yum!) and green tea in a teeny tiny glass. Not only did I discover that I have no crockery this morning (as I am staying in a self catered apartment) but the few glasses I did have are only big enough for a large mouse! Guessing the Americanised supersizes hasn’t caught on yet!

By the way, Im not expecting to update this every day (as is the way with diaries!) just quite frequently at the mo, whilst I am settling in (and have no friends and no social life haha). 1st day at work went well, Got the big tour, the Hk office is over 5flooors…massive! I met a gazillion people whose names I have already mostly forgotten, everyone speaks very good English although sometimes I have to slow down what I am saying to them and remember not to use slang!

At lunch my bosses took me for a traditional lunch (dim sum) at a Chinese restaurant… I tried some bizarre and wholly adventurous dishes (bearing in mind I have been veggie for ages!). I had shrimp and prawn dumplings, fried beef and…. Jellyfish!! The jellyfish looked and tasted a bit like rubber bands! For dessert I had some egg tarts. As it is the Chinese mid-autumn festival next week there are lots of fruit baskets being delivered at the moment so have also been given lots of different berries, drangonfruit and mooncake… which is hard to describe, like a sweet pork pie with solid duck egg yolks inside!!

After work Celina took me to Tsim Sha Tsui to catch the shuttle bus to the hotel. It’s a big tourist area with lots of markets and shops, very busy! After I got off the bus (which didn’t seem to take very long at all) I realised I had gone to the wrong hotel aghh! There are 2horizon hotels in Hk! So I had to get back on the bus back to town then wait for ages to catch the right bus… then got held up in traffic and then my driver (I was the only one on the bus) got stopped by the police for ages -god knows why! As a result didn’t get back to the hotel until gone 10pm!!!

So, now super tired again, have had a shower and ready for bed…where has the day gone??!

My phone I have discovered is locked and it is not recommended to have it unlocked (expensive & unreliable) so hopefully James can send me his old unlocked phone across (??) so that I can get my HK mobile up and running,

The money out here is strange, $15 to £1 so when I bought a iced green tea it cost $32 (about £2!)…. Going to take some getting used to, but in general from what I have seen so far things are not that expensive, roughly the same as London prices. Travel especially is so cheap, a weeks travel ticket is $100 (about £6).

The hardest thing so far is not being able to just pick up the phone and call someone for a chat, especially since I am about to go to bed and most of you shall just be finishing work!

Zai jian everyone, keep me updated… I have a feeling this week will go warp lighting speed fast!

Wan an,

Tanya xx
