20/09/2007 (singing):oo-ooh Im an alien..Im an English(woman) in Hong Kong!
So another day done at work, this week is going so fast! Today I was researching the company history and structure etc. getting my facts straight in preparation for my first official meeting tomorrow morning, don’t need to be making any stupid mistakes!!
Got taken for yet another exotic lunch today with some girls from the office, everyone is so nice and there is a queue of people waiting to take me out whilst I am at the HK office so sweet! Not such a mental dish today, fresh sole fish with spinach and rice yum yum! Its my new favourite dish and until this week had never even tried fish!
So thought Id update you all on some of the western/eastern differences I have noticed so far (just briefly considering I have only been here 4days- Im no expert!!). Firstly, the transport is soooo much better, its clean, air conditioned and ALWAYS on time, when it is late it makes the news its so rare!! All the announcements are in Cantonese, then Mandarin and then English so its really easy to use!
In restaurants also, most restaurants have an English translation written down but I have taken to just randomly ordering, by pointing at the first thing I see when the waiter arrives -more fun that way!! As I mentioned before everyone’s English is pretty good if you speak a bit slower than normal…keep getting corrected on my pronunciation of Shenzhen (its pronounced shun-zun), but I got my revenge when Angel pronounced Cambridge as ‘Com-bradge’ took me ages to find out what she meant!
Here in Man On Shan where I am staying, and Mong Kok where I am working I have seen hardly any other westerners (its no wonder people stare at me all the time!) I think mostly the westerners are on HKisland…heading there this weekend so will let you know! Also, because I went to uni in Scotland everyone at work now thinks I am Scottish and keep asking me about ‘the beautiful landscape’! I have got bored of explaining the whole ‘actually Im from Bournemouth, if I was Scottish I doubt you would understand my accent at all!’ malarkey and just pretend I was born and raised in Galashiels hehe!
Have put some pictures of my hotel apartment on facebook, for those who are not on there I will email them across when I eventually get online.. this wireless network I am tapping has a dodgy signal, although yesterday managed a skype call with Jamie and James…so great to chat, so looking forward to calling everyone else!
Right, better sign off here, got some notes to prepare for tomorrow, my training officially starts then and I think I am going to be VERY busy! I was the first to leave the office today at 6.30 and no-one else looked as if they were even thinking about going home (the Chinese love working!!)
Lots of love as per usual… wish I could use my harry potter powers to bring you all here at will!
