30/05/2008 - Swallow spittle

... I use the title phrase with 2 related meanings.. firstly, swallow as in the bird, and secondly, swallow as in eat. Put them together and you have the makings of what Chinese believe is a delicacy I discovered yesterday. To put the story into context was having a HUGE dim sum lunch (they alway are!) and at the end they served egg custard tarts (which are delicious) except this time they had this weird clear jelly stuff on top that tasted like the clear jelly you get in pork pies, 'what is this on top' I asked - except I shouldn't have as the reply came back: Swallow spittle. BLLLLEEEEUUUUUGHHHHHH instant yaking potential was induced!
Apparantly and I quote:

'Collocalia or commonly known as swiftlet (or walet in Indonesia), which can only be found in the tropical costal area. And the precious swiftlet nest is the only bird's nest constructed entirely from their saliva and is the only edible bird's nest beneficial to human body.'

Here is a link to a site dedicated entirely to the subject of edible birds nests!!!

So anyway thought I would share that with you.
Results from the photo survey are in and apparently yes, it does indeed look much like me (I dont see it?!!)

Been working hard this week on some artwork and the only other thing to report is that it has been PISSING down with rain, within minutes the streets are like rivers and without an umbrella it is like walking through a waterfall! extraordinary!

Laura, aghhh all finished now and into the world of work and being a grown up!! Phone me this week if you can re: you know what!
