11/05/2008 – Urchins & Pets

Went to Sai Kung yesterday which is a tiny floating seafood market fishing place in the north east of HK, nearby where I was staying when I first arrived here. On the streets outside the restaurants were huge stocks of fish/ seafood in clear ginormous containers… couldn’t believe how enormous some of the fish were, or how crammed in the huge lobsters were!
There were a group of 10 of us and we took a wee fishing boat for around an hour to this random little spot (not sure where) and there you get off at the pier and there is an area of a couple of tables just next to the pier where they served us the hugest platter of seafood.. and bearing in mind that I am still relatively a newby to the whole seafood, and fish/meat in general thing, I found it slightly hardcore! 10seconds after sitting down live sea urchins where put on the table, looking all spiky and alien-esque. Before I had a chance to digest the bizarrity of this little nugget of extraordinary creation in front of me, one was thrust into my hand (can I take a quick moment to say eww, omg, and wtf!). Felt soo strange, like pom poms gone seriously wrong.
Swiftly following me overcoming my fear of the sea’s unknown, and being able to admire their weird and wonderful appearance rather than be repelled by it, they were cracked open and I was given a spoon and told to tuck in… ! I felt a bit strange scooping out the guts of what was alive and kicking seconds ago, plus it still had that reflex action of seafish and was slightly wiggling about still… hmmm.
On the boat in the way back we stopped, turned on the floodlights and whipped out the fishing lines ready to catch a whale or two. Don’t want to deceive you into thinking we had any high tech equipment, more like a small hook (without bait) attached to a line, which might explain how we didn’t manage to catch a thing! Not for want of trying I might add, but I guess luck (or skill) was not on my side!
We stopped for Chinese dessert on the way back, a combination of yummy mango pancakes, sweet dumplings and sesame seed paste (black in colour, peanutty in taste). Was yum, but Im not quite ready to swap the cookies, chocolate cake, and cheesecake mmm!
Other recent events in my life include fighting an overwhelming urge to purchase a pet during my lunchbreak the other day. Mong Kok is an area which has one street for one type of product, and Tung Choi St is a street that is lined with all kinds of pet shops, selling all kinds of pets… top of the attraction list was terrapins, turtles, snakes and lizards, and Russian hamsters, guinea pigs, and baby rabbits! I considered the options, regrettably had to decide that It was not sensible for me to purchase a small furry thing when I live in China and work silly hours.. boo! I am still holding out hope that circumstances will allow me at some point to purchase the pet of my dreams, although I worry about anything that breathes being dependant on me… I wonder if I might make me slightly more responsible considering now Im supposed to be a grown up??!
Well that’s about it for this entry, am going out this eve for some drunken bank holiday fun (it the Buddhas bday tomorrow so we all get the day of tomorrow yus!). There is some sort of Reggae evening on tonight so I am torn between wanting to wear killer heels that would look awesome with my new beautiful $10 dress, or wearing flip flops in order to be able fully utilize my dancing abilities.. hmm decisions decisions!
Lots of love from me as always.
Quick shout out to Bennett: Congrats on completing the Dissy! I understand exactly how that feels so you must be loving that its done and dusted now woop woop!
