09/10/2008 - Magnificent Macau
Me and Clare the cat took a wee donder to Macau last week (public holidays in hk very much make up for the serious lack of annual leave!). Takes around one hour by feer and the official verdict is that it was very quaint and pretty and also very tacky and glitzy all at the same time, they have an area on the waterfront made up of different 'lands' so its like you are walking through Europe... in miniture... in Asia... bizarre lol
Bit of info you:
One of the two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China, the other being Hong Kong. Macau lies on the western side of the Pearl River Delta, bordering Guangdong province in the north and facing the South China Sea in the east and south.
Macau was both the first and the last European colony in China. Portuguese traders first settled in Macau in the 16th century and subsequently administered the region until the handover on December 20, 1999.
Macau's economy is based largely on tourism, much of it geared toward gambling. Other chief economic activities in Macau are export-geared textile and garment manufacturing, banking and other financial services.
Here are some pics, of the pretty old town, bought some beautiful furniture bits and bobs here. Pics also the crazy las-vegas esques part of town, felt extremely surreal to walk through!
Looking forward to going back next month and glitzing it up at the casinos!
Tx
